The managerial strategy thematic has been the object of a growing concern and studies in the academic literature, however few studies have been observed about the enterprising strategies. Thus, the main objective of this study is to identify the main characteristics of the process of strategy formation in companies of the enterprising context, relating them with the conceptual premises of the Enterprising Strategy School, as presented by Mintzberg et al (2000), using a field verification in small load companies in the food sector, with head offices in the city of Fortaleza. For this exploratory-descriptive study, accomplished during 2003, the primary data were collected through semistructured interviews with entrepreneurs and managers of the companies and...

A associação de Philopota sp. Wiedemann (Diptera, Acroceridae) com flores do Gervão-Azul, Stachytarphetta cayenensis (Verbenaceae) na Ilha da Marambaia, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Entomología
Luz,José Roberto Pujol.
The acrocerids (small headed-flies) form a small group of flies, which are difficult to find and observe. They are rare in collections. Their larvae are heteromorphic parasitoids of many families of spiders and their imagoes show a great deal of morphological variation. Little is known about the biology and systematics of this group in the Neotropical region, especially the Philopotinae. Most studies are based on species from Europe and North America. The Philopotinae occurs througout the world, and are characterized by the strongly developed postpronota, which form a shield dorsally in front of the scutum. Fifty specimens of Philopota sp. were collected from branches of Stachytarphetta cayenensis (Verbenaceae) in the Ilha da Marambaia (23º 04' S - 43º 53'...

A Bayesian Approach to Optimal Cross-Hedging of Cottonseed Products Using Soybean Complex Futures AgEcon
Rahman, Shaikh Mahfuzur; Dorfman, Jeffrey H.; Turner, Steven C..
Cottonseed crushers face substantial risk in terms of input and output price variability and they are limited in their planning by the lack of a viable futures contract for cottonseed or cottonseed products. This study examines the feasibility of cross-hedging cottonseed products using the soybean complex futures. Different cross-hedging strategies are evaluated for eight time horizons relative to the expected profit and utility of the crusher. A Bayesian approach is employed to estimate both model parameters and optimal hedge ratios, allowing consistency with expected utility maximization in the presence of estimation risk. The results reveal that both whole cottonseed and cottonseed products can be successfully cross-hedged using soybean complex futures....

A Bilateral Comparison of Fruit and Vegetable Consumption: U.S. and Canada AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Patterson, Paul M..
Many public programs promote diets rich in fruits and vegetables based on evidence on the derived health benefits. Sill, produce consumption in the U.S. lags behind other nations, even its most culturally similar neighbor–Canada. This study uses a structural latent variable model to test the role quality and health information play in explaining observed differences in produce consumption. The Alchian-Allen effect predicts that higher quality, higher absolute margin produce will be exported, suggesting that quality may be an important demand factor in importing nations such as Canada. The results show that dietary health information is significant in expanding demands. Quality also promotes fruit consumption in Canada.

A bioeconomic analysis of the impact of decommissioning programs: Application to a limited-entry french scallop fishery ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Daures, Fabienne; Fifas, Spyros.
The objective of this paper is to assess the benefits and costs of decommissioning policies aimed at reducing fleet capacity through premiums offered by the public authority to fishermen to scrap their vessels. A case study, the limited entry scallop fishery of the Saint Brieuc Bay, France, is used to con- sider the problem of excess capacity and to model the bioeconomic consequences of disinvestment behavior. Special attention is paid to the assessment of fishermen's willingness to leave the fishery and to the implementation of public policy in terms of budget level and premiums offered to the fishermen. Spreadsheet simulations show that the impact of decommissioning programs is positive in terms of net surplus, even in the case of increasing technical...

A bio-economic evaluation of the American Foulbrood (AFB) control program in Western Australia AgEcon
Ghose, Ananda; Hawkins, Chris.
American foulbrood (AFB) is considered the most significant brood disease of bees in Western Australia. The Department of Agriculture of Western Australia (DAWA) provides assistance to apiarists by way of quarantine and surveillance measures under the AFB control program. A bio-economic evaluation was considered necessary by the department for setting future policy direction. As a way forward, a number of risk analysis scenarios were simulated to estimate the future prevalence rate of AFB in the absence of the present program. This epidemiological investigation was complemented by an economic evaluation which identifies the extent of benefit that flows through to direct beneficiaries. The paper provides a comprehensive bio-economic analysis and suggests...

A bioeconomic model of a marine park AgEcon
Greenville, Jared W.; MacAulay, T. Gordon.
A spatial bioeconomic model of a fishery will be used to investigate the effect of creating a marine park in a heterogeneous environment. Focus will be placed on the relevant biological and economic conditions needed to provide a benefit to both fishers and conservationists alike. The fishing environment will be one of limited entry to better simulate the conditions which exist in many developed nations. Fishers will be assumed to operate across patched in which the fish stocks are linked via either sink-source or density dependant spatial relationships.

A BIO-ECONOMIC MODEL OF WETLAND PROTECTION ON PRIVATE LANDS AgEcon
Whitten, Stuart M.; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Wetland ecosystems on privately owned farms – such as those on the Murrumbidgee River Floodplain in the state of New South Wales, Australia – provide a mix of potentially valuable outputs to their owners and the wider community. The mix of values generated is dependent on the biophysical status of the wetlands, which in-turn, is dependent on the land management in and around these multiple-output ecosystems. Despite the range of private and public values generated, management decisions are based primarily on the private values that landowners receive. These private land management decisions also affect social values. Hence, there is potentially a demand for public policy to influence decisions based on the social values wetlands generate. This paper...
